For anyone who has ever considered giving up, keep this journey in mind and know it can happen!

From Publishers Marketplace 3-3-10:

Lisa Albert's MERCY LILY, about an Oregon teenager faced with a heartbreaking choice about her ill mother, to Brian Farrey at Flux, for publication in Fall 2011, by Andrea Brown Literary Agency.

I began writing this novel over ten years ago. Yes, ten! Before that, I wrote another novel and several picture books. I also wrote newspaper articles about antiques and the Internet.

But as soon as I began writing MERCY LILY, I knew it’d be my break-out novel. While I wrote it, many writers critiqued it and I revised as I went. In 2001, it was awarded a Letter of Merit in SCBWI’s Contemporary Novel Grant award and received Honorable Mention in ByLine Magazine’s First Chapter of a Novel contest.

I knew I was onto something and kept writing and revising. I was also working on other WIP’s and then in 2005, I began writing nonfiction books for Enslow Publishing.

With my day job, teenagers, nonfiction work, it was hard at times, but I kept at it. It took several years to finish it and get it to the point where I was ready to begin shopping it to agents. And then...yay...in late 2007, I sent queries to four agencies and ended up signing with the Andrea Brown Agency. Score!

Flash forward to January 2010: My agent sent MERCY LILY out to a fine batch of editors. Within two weeks, Brian Farrey at Flux wanted to set up a phone chat with me to discuss revision ideas. I was excited and nervous but as soon as Brian and I began chatting, I was at ease. I was blown away by his love for my book but I had to act all cool because there were like eight other editors who still had it. I later told Mary that I wasn’t so sure anyone else could top his enthusiasm. I also said I felt I’d been asked to the prom but couldn’t give an answer yet. It was kind of grueling!

All the other editors had about a week to let us know their interest level. The manuscript came “extremely, extremely close” at one house, was called “unique and utterly thought-provoking” by another and garnered really great comments by everyone. But in the end, they all dropped out of the running for one reason or another (a couple we never heard back from). It was then that we were free to move forward with negotiations with Flux and OMG, my head is still spinning. The fact that my manuscript will be a published novel is kind of hard to wrap around my brain. Seeing the Publishers Marketplace blurb has made it less surreal.

I am so happy to report I am officially a Flux author! Brain had called the novel “brilliant” and “something special” when we talked on the phone and those words kept floating around and easing my tense neck (no kidding) while I waited for it all to be finalized. I feel very fortunate and can’t wait to begin the process with my editor!

Fall 2011, here we come! It's real!
