  • Jan. 31st, 2009 at 2:20 PM

Tagged by several people from LJ and Facebook so here it goes! 25 Things About Moi:

1.      I’m the youngest of eight kids.

2.      I’m Italian, Irish, German and Norwegian.

3.      I make a mean Italian sausage cheese tortellini soup.

4.      I grew up in Milwaukee on a block with lots of kids.

5.      We were allowed to run with scissors on days that the blade sharpening man pushed his cart up our block (I can still hear the sound of the stone wheel, sharpening the blades!).

6.      The blade man was sometimes followed by the fruit cart man.

7.      I had an orange Huffy with a banana seat and high handlebars and an orange skateboard.

8.      My first car was used 1972 Cutlass Supreme. I bought it before I had my driver’s license.

9.      I spend my mornings writing nonfiction, novels, and 25 things about me lists. I work in a school library in the afternoon.

10. The first rejection I ever received was from Helen Gurley Brown at Cosmopolitan Magazine when I was 19.

11. I’m a former dealer of antiques and collectibles.

12. I like real people and fake jewelry.

13. I used to collect vintage purses.

14. I believe there is a fine line between self-promotion and bragging.

15. I love a good cheeseburger and a cold beer.

16. I’m a backyard bird watcher and once saw a pileated woodpecker. Amazing!

17. Our dearly beloved parakeet used to mimic our dog whistle and drive the dog insane.

18. Before kids, hubby and I traveled via motorcycle to Canada, Corpus Christi Texas, Boulder Colorado, Tennessee and more.

19. My office is decorated with my kids’ artwork dating back from when they were 2 & 3 years old.

20. My office window sills display the collection of rocks and fossils that I’ve found.

21. My favorite flower is the Day Lily. I hope to get a lily tattoo this year!

22. I believe in karma (Hear that, used car dealers?).

23. I love sushi and wasabi.

24. My friend and I were taken from our seats and placed in the front row at a Billy Joel concert.

25. I have a wide taste in music. Old school disco, hip-hop, some rap, rock n roll, some country, and will dance to anything.

It's been a great week. Since I handed in my Stephenie Meyer bio the week of the 19th, I've spent lots of time reading. Oh how I've missed it and the wait was well worth it.

FAR FROM YOU by Lisa Schroeder ( [info]lisa_schroeder  ) is beautifully written. I fell in love with the mc immediately and immersed myself in her joy, sadness, love, and understanding. I am amazed (but not surprised) by Lisa Schroeder's skill at telling this story through intimate verse. Bravo!

I also read THE HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne Collins. I did not want to put this book down. I was engrossed in the story and its telling. My only wee complaint was a switch that came in the form of a rule change. As a reader, I felt a bit mislead. It was resolved and the reason for the switch was explained but by that time, I had grown a bit suspicious and it felt a bit convenient. Overall though, I loved the pacing, action, and characters in this book.

As for my books, I'm going to digging up an older MG for revision and continue on with another WIP MG. I hope to have them to my agent in May or June.

My YA is still out on rounds and I sure could use some good news soon! Come on publishing world, it's a great book! One editor we heard from said it's thought-provoking, heartbreaking and made her cry. All good things and just the type of reaction I was going for. It came close. Another is bound to love it, right?

On the home front, Sweet A has mono now. Dear J is just recovering from it. My dog is even sick. WTH? I have doctor and vet bills coming out of my ears. Better get those taxes done ASAP so I can use our refund.

This weekend, I'm going to read SAVVY and THE UNDERNEATH, make homemade chicken soup and do taxes. I am a wild woman!

That's a Great Idea Thursday

  • Jan. 29th, 2009 at 11:03 AM

It was my turn to post over at KidLitCentralNews today and I share the Method to My Madness when it comes to writing nonfiction. Go take a look and dig into that nonfiction project you know you have in you.

Stephenie Meyer bio ... Promo a go-go

  • Jan. 19th, 2009 at 10:37 PM

I better get that last chapter in tomorrow because Enslow has already started offering the book for pre-order. Nice! :-) It's been a fast track project and quite the interesting trip. It'll be available May 1, 2009 so that makes it 9 months from the day I was offered the contract to the actual release. Crazy fast!

I sent half the book earlier in the month and everything else this morning, sans chapter nine. A bit of tweaking and it'll be on its way tomorrow afternoonish.

I've received several Google Alerts today telling me the title is up on various sites. So, I thought I'd make one of my own. It's bare bone right now, but go take a look-see. http://www.stepheniemeyerbiography.com/

Guess what I'm going to do with my free time? I got me a date with a Rug Doctor. Then, I am going to tackle 18 years of photographs and get them in albums. Then, purge the office, do taxes, and sleeeep.

Squeee!

  • Jan. 12th, 2009 at 7:48 PM

Okay, not a book sale "squeee!" but a "I have mad research skills" squeee. Seriously. I could work for The Enquirer, but I don't. I write for Enslow. :-)

You know that bio I'm almost done with? The one about an author who has taken over the world and has everyone all vampire crazy? I just acquired the greatest photo thanks to her high school prom date.

Maybe I'll take that PI up on his offer and do a little side work come summer. Really, I was offered a job as an assistant PI several months ago.

Back to my coffin....ahem, cave.

A New Year's Toast

Happy New Year, LJ friends!

2008 was quite a year!

My second book with Enslow, So You Want to Be a Film or TV Actor was released and is doing nicely.

I was contracted to write the biography of Stephenie Meyer and will be turning it in in a few weeks.

My fabulous agent, Caryn Wiseman at Andrea Brown Literary Agency, sent out my YA novel, MERCY LILY. Having an agent is a new experience and it’s been wonderful.

I’m grateful that my hubby and kids are healthy and happy! Hubby got the “all clear” this year. Sweet A got her driver’s license. Dear J became a senior and applied for college. (hang on...I need to spike my coffee....)

Okay, I’m back!

2009 is going to be full of change.

I’ll probably be wreck if Dear J moves away. A proud wreck.

Sweet A will be a senior and applying for colleges.

I hope to have a YA sale this year. Maybe another NF book or two, too.

My big writing goal (the one I can control) is to finish my MG novel, DREAM, and outline books 2 and 3.

Revising my MG novel, GOOD-BYE CAJUN MOON is also on the 2009 to-do list.

At the top of my 2009 list is to spend more time with family and friends. Not worry about things beyond my control. Lastly, to be content with what I have, and be grateful for the possibilities to come.

Happy New Year!

I'm taking a wee break, going into hibernation for a hiatus.

A foot to heal. (a big ouch that's getting better even though I walk like my leg is numb)

A son to nurse (he tested positive for mono today - poor kid.) (I pray my sore throat and headache has nothing to do with the fact that I finished his oatmeal the other day!)

And blankets to wallow in until tomorrow. Because I need to. Just one day of wallowing and then I'll get back to the Meyer bio.

There's also shopping to do and candy to make (peanut butter cups from scratch and turtles!)

I sure could use that chocolate while I'm wallowing. Off to watch House, have hot cocoa and put the tree lights on.

Funny Friday: You need a laugh, don't you?

  • Dec. 5th, 2008 at 9:36 AM

In the doom and gloom state we're in right now, I thought it'd be fun to post a couple of true stories from my family to give you a laugh.

On a cold morning a few years ago, I watched some trash pickers go through a pile of discarded stuff at our curb. Meanwhile, my son, who was waiting for me in the garage thought he'd be funny and yell, "Hey, whaddaya doing?" in a deep voice. Not knowing he did this, I was horrified when the couple quickly loaded a box into their car and drove away. My son came in laughing. "I scared those people," he said and told me what he shouted. "Did you see that old basket sticking out of the box they loaded into their van?" I asked. "It was full of frozen dog poop."

Needless to say, those people never came back on garbage day.

~~~~~~~~
When my daughter was 3 1/2, we were watching TV and a pregnant woman came onto the screen. "That lady is FAT!" my little girl said. After telling her that's not polite, I explained, "She's pregnant. There's a baby in there." My daughter's eyes grew wide. She looked from me to the TV in disbelief. "Did she EAT the baby?" she whispered.
Enjoy your weekend, LJ friends! And remember, what doesn't kill us will only make us stronger!
Keep sending vibes, too. My YA has piqued the interest of someone I'd love to work with. All I know right now is that it's dang exciting and we should know more soon. It's just interest at the moment. Let's hope the story and the writing help it become more.
Wheeeee.....
Biz updates:
We're still waiting to hear about the YA that is OUT THERE. Let's hope the powers that be are crunching numbers and preparing to give us THE CALL. I'm so ready.
The bio of Stephenie Meyer is coming along. Her fans have been so great about providing photos, I have some very interesting ones!
Once this book is sent in, I hope to outline and flesh out a couple of nonfiction projects for Wise Agent to shop. It may take a while, though.
I continue to peck at my MG novel, DREAM, and would love to spend more time on it. Must make more time.
I've been asked to do an author visit scheduled for April 2010. Wow, this school plans early!
A bit of personal news: My nephew was in a very bad car accident last Sunday and has been in a coma. Last night, though, he opened his eyes and recognized his mom. The nurse had been pinching him and yelling his name. When he looked at her, she asked for him to show her two fingers. He gave her the peace sign. I bawled like a baby when I got the news.
Today is a very good day!
What did I miss while I was in paradise?
  • Oct. 29th, 2008 at 9:05 AM
I'm back from Key West and I just know I missed all sorts of good news. So, pleeease let me know what I missed while I was away.
I did a little reading and a lot of playing while I was gone. We had a ton of fun! Fantasy Fest was going on while we were there. We didn't plan it that way, it was just the week that my MIL had the timeshare. My teens saw things that scarred them for life. LOL The Hyatt condo overlooked the ocean and was a block from Mallory Square and all the shopping I could handle. We visited museums and several points of interest, too. I parasailed, which is a total blast and considering I'm afraid of deep water and heights, it was a real accomplishment for me.
I ended up doing a little research while I was there and came home with a few story ideas - fiction and nonfiction, so that's always a plus!
Here's me with Earnest Hemingway's typewriter and manuscript.
Here's the view from our porch. Ahhhhh!
Here's Sweet A before the tightrope walker juggled kinives and walked over her. Hubby is holding the rope with about 12 other men, including my son, Dear J.
And here's Hubby after he switched places with Sweet A. Notice how close the juggler is to him. The men holding the rope did a great job! Whew!
It's 33 degrees here in Wisconsin today. Sigh. Great writing weather, though. 500 word goal today. Off to meet it!
Good News Friday
  • Oct. 17th, 2008 at 8:37 AM
Lots of good, happy, fun news to end the week...
On a personal note, and the best news for sure, my hubby got the ALL CLEAR from his doctors last Friday. No sign of remaining lymphoma at all! I can breath again. (and focus!)
We're heading here for a week of play. I'm imaging myself kicking back when my cell rings and it's my agent calling with good news about my YA. Wouldn't THAT be fun! We should be hearing from editors soon, so keep sending good vibes.
My call for Stephenie Meyer event photos brought in some interesting shots, including some good ones from Germany. Keep spreading the word. It's working! I'm about 1/4 into the bio. I'll have to really BIC when I return from heaven, where I'll be reading Breaking Dawn.
My mg WIP is so fun to write. I wrote chapter nine this week. It makes me happy when my crit partners tell me they love it and that they LOL'd in all the right places. I'm taking it with me and hope to work on it during the flights.
See you next week!
That's a Great Idea Thursday!
  • Oct. 16th, 2008 at 9:35 AM
It was my turn to post over at KidLitCentralNews today. Pop on over and check out my great idea for staying motivated.
You'll be glad you did. Promise!
Lisa~
If you have any photographs of Stephenie Meyer and would like to see them used in her biography, please contact me. I'm interesting in any shots of Stephenie: her signing, her on stage, etc. I'm also looking for fan photos taken at any Twilight saga events and/or release parties.
Spread the word. Let anyone you know who may have photos I could use in the bio I'm doing for Enslow to contact me. A release form will be provided and any photo used will be given a photo credit and caption.
email me at  Writes4kids (@) wi.rr.com
Thank you!!
Totally Random Tuesday
  • Oct. 7th, 2008 at 8:52 AM
It’s that time of year. I received a Royalty Statement from Enslow and happy to report that my books continue to sell. Even though I haven’t earned my advances back yet, it’s nice to know the books are in schools and libraries. I don’t fully understand how to read these statements and I’m glad I have an agent to take control over this type of stuff when my fiction sells.
Speaking of fiction, there’s no word yet on my YA out on the first round. Fingers crossed!
I’ve been pecking at my WIP DREAM and think I’m about half-way to The End.
I’m also working on the bio of Stephenie Meyer. It’s been a tad slower than I anticipated but that’s because it’s senior year for my son and I’ve been spending lots of time on college stuff, homecoming week and senior photos. Plus, I procrastinated yesterday by – get this! – scrubbing my shower. If that’s not over-the-top procrastination, I don’t know what is. Doing that means I won’t have Fiction Friday ‘cause I’ll be playing catch-up on the bio.
I’m loving my job at the school library! We have the Scholastic Book Fair this week and I have a stack of books on hold. I was thrilled to see Savvy and The Host there! Perfect timing, too. They’ll be traveling to the Keys with me in a couple of weeks. Ahhh.
Lastly, the schedule for the Wisconsin Reading Association conference is up. There’s a great line-up of authors and illustrators and Lois Lowry will be the keynote speaker on February 7th. I’m so there! Anyone else planning on going?
Waiting - Faith - Somebody Slap Me
  • Sep. 19th, 2008 at 9:36 AM
Waiting is harder than it used to be for me. I think it’s because now, I’m usually waiting on several things at once.
I’m waiting to hear back about an interview request. I need an answer soon.
I’m waiting to hear about agented submissions that are out there. (I vowed not to think about it for another month - pffft!)
I’m waiting to hear about the status of an article.
I’ve always been good at waiting but it’s getting harder. Part of it is due to the announcement of sales of other writers. My first reaction is always “Woot! Woot!” and I am genuinely happy and thrilled about new sales. Then I start to worry and second guess myself, thinking stupid things like, “Will I ever get a deal like that?” “Is a full-time writing career around the corner for me?” If I could beat down this whiney voice in my head, I’d do it with a ream of 22 lb paper.
I flip-flop between thoughts like, “This is good and will sell!” to “What was I thinking? This is lame!” If I could pummel my inner critic, I would.
I’m trying hard to have faith in myself and the industry. I’m trying hard not to compare. I’m trying hard not to second guess myself.
Somebody slap me and tell me to buck up. I think I need a writers camp!!
Peck peck peck, eBay, repeat
  • Sep. 15th, 2008 at 9:47 AM
My progress on the Meyer bio is coming along. It takes me 2 to 3 times longer to write a page of nonfiction compared to fiction. I've come to terms with that fact. I try to write nonfiction Monday thru Thursday and when I've reached my four day goal, I reward myself by working on my fiction on Fridays (and doing weekly chores, too).
Hopefully, by Thursday, this will have increased to 2800 and I can work on Dream on Friday.
In other news, I spent the weekend going through hoards of antiques and collectibles that have been stored in my house for years. (I'm a former antiques dealer) I threw a couple of items on eBay and found something fun to send to Cindy Lord. I also owe Sonya Sones a piece of vintage jewelry because she wears the coolest old stuff and she took the photo I use here.
So what do you guys collect? I just may have it!
There's a great video interview with Andrea Brown, of the Andrea Brown Literary Agency over at Author Link today. As an ABLA client, it's really nice to hear her talk about the agency and see her in action.
Enjoy!
My inspiration
  • Sep. 3rd, 2008 at 9:20 AM
Thirteen years ago, when my kiddos were just 3 & 4, it was 1995 and I had fallen back in love with children's literature. These two have been, and will always be, my inspiration.
First day of Preschool: Dear J went 3 days a week, 2 1/2 hours. Sweet A went along on Fridays.
Yesterday: Dear J is a Senior and Sweet A is a Junior.
I have a tradition of taking a First Day of School photo every year. They humor me.
1 - Wise Wonderful Agent is preparing to send my YA novel OUT THERE!
2 - I started my new position in the school library yesterday and put new acquisitions on display. Two of them were mine!  Ha! A Curse as Dark as Gold by [info]elizabethcbunce  and a DVD of author interviews with [info]cynthialord</lj> on the cover were other new additions. I think I’m going to love my new job and being surrounded by friends and colleagues!
3 - My research is going good for the Stephenie Meyer bio for Enslow.
4 - DREAM – my WIP MG, is coming along and I am loving it.
I feel the need to go to NYC for fun research.
5 - As a former antiques dealer, I still have boxes and boxes of inventory. I’m planning to unload it on eBay and get a booth at one of the upcoming markets. Anyone need an early brunette Ponytail Barbie head? LOL
